What price per square foot tells you

Price per square foot is the fastest way to compare homes of different sizes, and the number every online estimate — ours included — starts from. Multiply the local rate by a home’s finished square footage and you have a base value; condition, lot, and layout then move it 10–25% either way. It is also the honest way to compare cities: a $500,000 home means very different things at $150/sq ft (a 3,300 sq ft house) and at $500/sq ft (a 1,000 sq ft condo).

The rates here are the median listing price per square foot in each ZIP from Realtor.com’s public market data, paired with Zillow’s typical-value index, refreshed monthly. Every ZIP page also shows the typical home value, value by home size, and the household income needed to buy there.
