Two 2027 Colors of the Year are out so far: Behr’s “Grounded” (T27-01, announced August 26, 2026) — an earthy olive green that moves between olive and moss with subtle brown undertones — and Dutch Boy’s “Deep Rooted,” a bold terracotta with dark undertones. Sherwin-Williams has released its earthy 2027 Colormix forecast, with its single Color of the Year expected in September; Benjamin Moore typically follows in October and Pantone in December. The theme is unmistakable: earth tones are replacing 2026’s bright greens.

What has been announced, and what is still coming

The 2027 Color of the Year calendar. Announced entries are fact; expected timing for the rest follows each brand’s usual cadence and is our estimate, not theirs.

The through-line is already clear: 2027 is an earth-tone year. Olive, moss, terracotta, ochre and clay — muted, brown-anchored colors — are replacing the bright greens that led 2026. If you are repainting this fall and want to land ahead of the curve rather than behind it, these are the shades stores will promote all year.

What adopting a 2027 color actually costs

The math is the same for any of these colors — walls only, two coats, 8-ft ceilings, one door and one window deducted, 350 sq ft per gallon per coat:

Repaint quantities by room size, computed by this site’s paint engine. Paint cost assumes a typical $35–$60 per gallon across the brands’ mid and premium lines; the pro figure is walls-only at the published $1.00–$3.00 per sq ft of paintable wall.

15×15 living room444 sq ft2.54 gal3 gallons$105–$180$445–$1,330

Two honesty notes the trend articles skip. First, these are mid-dark colors: over existing light walls two coats normally covers, but going the other way later — back from olive or terracotta to a light neutral — usually takes a high-hide primer plus extra coats. The exit costs more than the entry, so commit to a color you will live with. Second, an accent wall is the cheap trial: one 12-ft wall is a quart-and-gallon job, and it is exactly how the Deep Rooted render above uses the color. Run your own numbers in the paint estimator, and pick the right finish with the sheen guide — eggshell for walls, satin for cabinets and doors.

How to try a 2027 color without repainting the house

  • Buy the real sample. Every brand sells sample sizes — Grounded is T27-01 at The Home Depot. Brush a 2-ft square on two walls (one sunny, one shaded) and watch it for a day; olive shifts noticeably between morning and evening light.
  • Start with the smallest surface. A front door in Grounded (rendered on our Behr Grounded page) is a quart-scale project with the highest curb-appeal return per dollar.
  • Match the undertone, not the name. If a premium gallon is not in the budget, any brand can mix an olive-moss green — bring the sample chip, not the marketing name.
Questions

The 2027 colors, answered

What is the Color of the Year for 2027?

There is no single one — each paint brand names its own. So far: Behr chose “Grounded”, an earthy olive green (announced August 26, 2026), and Dutch Boy chose “Deep Rooted”, a bold terracotta with dark undertones. Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and Pantone had not yet named their 2027 colors as of late August; this page is updated as each announcement lands.

What is Behr's Color of the Year for 2027?

“Grounded” (color code T27-01), announced August 26, 2026 — the program's 10th-anniversary pick. Behr describes it as an earthy olive green that “moves effortlessly between olive and moss, anchored by subtle brown undertones.” It is available across Behr's lines at The Home Depot. See it rendered in five rooms on our Behr Grounded page.

When does Sherwin-Williams announce its 2027 Color of the Year?

Sherwin-Williams has already released its 2027 Colormix Forecast — an earthy palette of ochre yellows, rich reds, light blues and creamy whites — and historically names its single Color of the Year in September. We add it to this page, rendered in rooms with repaint math, within a day of the announcement.

What colors are trending for 2027?

Earth tones, decisively. Every early 2027 signal points the same way: Behr's olive-moss green, Dutch Boy's dark terracotta, and a Sherwin-Williams forecast built on ochre, clay reds and creamy neutrals. The vivid greens that dominated 2026 are receding in favor of muted, brown-anchored colors that read as calm rather than loud.

How much does it cost to repaint a room in a 2027 color?

A 12×12 room needs 1.99 gallons for two coats (348 sq ft of wall) — buy 2 gallons plus a quart, roughly $80–$140 at typical brand-line prices. Hiring it out runs $1.00–$3.00 per sq ft of wall. One caveat: these are mid-dark colors, and repainting back to a light color later usually needs a high-hide primer plus extra coats — the exit costs more than the entry.
